Ch. 01 · The story

What it's about

Spoiler level: Minor — for the synopsis & review below

When rifts from the virtual reality game Chronicles of Arcana invade Earth, some people awaken with the powers and identities of their former characters. Lee Hoyeol becomes Grandfell Claudi Arpeus Romeo, the absurdly formal, overdesigned avatar he created during his most embarrassing adolescent phase. Grandfell's immense discipline, knowledge, and magical potential make him exactly the defender humanity needs, but his personality also compels Hoyeol to speak and behave with relentless aristocratic seriousness. While guilds and demons misread his every declaration as evidence of hidden genius, Hoyeol must survive the gap between his ordinary inner voice and the imposing figure the world now sees.

Ch. 02 · Our verdict

My take

The Player Hides His Past runs on a joke that stays surprisingly durable: Hoyeol knows how ridiculous Grandfell sounds but can't stop embodying him, and solemn declarations keep accidentally becoming brilliant strategy. Vinukki's sharp art sells Grandfell as genuinely impressive rather than a parody. He's overpowered early, so the fights carry little suspense and the plot can feel episodic. The double-identity comedy gives standard dungeon material a consistently funny voice.

✓ Read it if…

You get polished monster battles and an underestimated hero dominating crises, but the dramatic irony keeps it from getting self-serious. Hoyeol's inner commentary makes him relatable, and Grandfell's rigid manners produce both laughs and surprisingly noble choices, with plenty of spectators reacting in disbelief.

! Skip it if…

The power fantasy is generous, so battles lose uncertainty once Grandfell takes over, and supporting characters mostly exist to witness his greatness. If the embarrassment-versus-dignity joke doesn't land for you, it gets formulaic. Romance is essentially absent.
