What it's about

Spoiler level: Minor — for the synopsis & review below

Johann Pertan has beauty, wealth, talent, and the top academic rank at Minuet Academy. His confidence is shaken when scholarship student Elena Evoy quietly surpasses him. Johann decides she is a rival who must be studied, but his observations become increasingly personal: what food she likes, why she works so hard, and why her approval matters more than winning. Elena remains focused on supporting herself and her family, largely unaware that the academy's most admired student is reorganizing his entire emotional life around her. Told largely through Johann's perspective, their rivalry becomes a slow education in humility, affection, and the limits of privilege.

Ch. 02 · Our verdict

My take

Observing Elena Evoy refreshes academy romance by centering Johann's bewildered point of view, and watching a clever boy use elaborate logic to avoid admitting he's in love is the main draw. Elena's reserve, competence, and financial reality make her more than an object of admiration. Dorong's soft art suits the quiet observation, though the gentle story can feel uneventful. The completed relationship grows from attention rather than possession.

✓ Read it if…

Johann's internal panic, jealousy, and dawning self-awareness drive the story, which is rare in romance. He becomes a lovable green flag by supporting Elena without asking her to give up her goals. The cozy academy setting and expressive art make it ideal if you like quiet, capable heroines and openly smitten men.

! Skip it if…

The pace is very slow and the outside plot is light, so there's little momentum if you want magic or court intrigue. Johann's privilege and early condescension take patience, and Elena's perspective gets less space than his. The romance favors sweetness over intense chemistry.
